Celtic Culture Comes Alive: Redruth’s Lowender Festival Returns

Lowender festival is back for another vibrant celebration of Celtic culture and heritage. Taking place in Redruth from 25-27 October 2024, the Lowender Festival promises an action-packed weekend of music, dance, and cultural activities that showcase the best of Cornwall’s Celtic connections.

The festival opens at Redruth Wesley Church on Friday evening with the “Thriving Traditions” concert, featuring an exciting collaboration between local Cornish performers and visiting artists from Scotland’s acclaimed Fèis Rois Ceilidh Trail. The evening continues at Redruth School with a lively cross-cultural ceilidh blending Cornish and Scottish dance traditions.

Festival-goers can look forward to a diverse Saturday programme, including the family-friendly “Troyl Teylu” (Cornish family ceilidh) and enchanting storytelling sessions celebrating local folklore. The day’s workshops offer opportunities to explore Celtic dance and music firsthand, while the evening entertainment features an eclectic mix including a Welsh Twmpath, traditional Breton Fest Noz, and an innovative Silent Celtic Disco.

A particular highlight is the “Yeth ha Tir” (Language and Land) concert, presenting a unique exploration of minority language songs from Cornwall, Latvia, and Scotland. This special performance demonstrates the profound connection between traditional languages and their native landscapes.

The festival concludes on Sunday with a range of workshops focusing on Celtic languages and dance traditions. The day features performances by some of Cornwall’s most celebrated vocal groups, including the Oggymen and Accapella Moonshine, before the legendary “Survivors’ Ceilidh” brings the weekend to a rousing close.

Whether you’re a seasoned folk enthusiast or simply curious about Cornwall’s Celtic heritage, Lowender Festival offers an unmissable opportunity to experience living traditions in the heart of Redruth. The festival continues to play a vital role in celebrating and preserving Cornwall’s place within the modern Celtic world.
