St Ives-based flautist Will Sleath celebrates 60 years of flute-playing in this special birthday concert together with pianist Tim Carey.
The colourful programme features five 20thC compositions: Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev’s brilliant opus 94 (arguably the finest contribution to the flute repertoire), the best-known work by American Kent Kennan, Bordeaux-born Paul Taffanel’s set piece for 1907 Paris Conservatory flute competition, a folksong-based sequence by the Hungarian Bela Bartók and a popular song by German American Kurt Weill.
The 21stC is represented by a virtuosic work by Czech composer Adam Skoumal.
The two Baroque sonatas – one German, one French – will be played on alto flute, to better reflect the traverso’s timbre/tessitura.
Will and Tim have performed together since the 90s.
Will is an experienced soloist, chamber musician, orchestral player and ethnic-flutes specialist, having worked in Germany, Sweden & Britain. A member of Cornish ensemble Kevos, he also appears as a soloist.
Tim is the doyen of flute accompanists, performing with major flautists worldwide. He additionally works as a duo partner, plays orchestral piano and appears as a soloist.
Outside music, Tim and Will share an obsession for languages and Gewürztraminer wines.
