Tintagel Castle

Inspiring the imaginations of artists and writers, Tintagel Castle is rich with fascinating stories, myths and history that children and adults can uncover at this leading English Heritage attraction.

Inhabited since the Roman period, this grand castle was once named by Geoffrey of Monmouth, a literary legend known for his chronicle ‘The History of the Kings of Britain’, as the place where King Arthur was conceived.

Visitors can explore the historic infrastructure and visit the on-site exhibition to see precious artefacts and intricate book sculptures, illustrating the castle’s literary links. A 3D model of the headland also features in the exhibition which highlights how this historic site has evolved over time.

The land which surrounds the castle offers a rich playground of discovery through the on-site interpretation panels which reveal the 1500-year history of Tintagel’s past, having been a royal stronghold, a busy trading port and a castle of intriguing and spellbinding stories.

Visitors can also climb the 148 steps onto the island and discover the Great Hall, which was built by Richard, Earl of Cornwall.
Steeped in history, a visit to this iconic castle is not complete without a stroll along the beach which sits below. And when you’re in need of some relaxation, a trip to the Beach Café offers comfortable seating and a welcoming atmosphere as you enjoy a tasty snack, delicious homemade cake or light lunch.
