About this event
An exhibition of new work by Cornish artist Andrew Jago at Rock Institute. The show will include scenes around the North Coast beaches and Camel Estuary, in particular a singular sandbar off Rock beach.
The form of the sandbar and its luminous quality against the backdrop of the coastline has been a recent theme throughout a new set of paintings shown for the first time at this exhibition. En plain air studies of Polzeath and Rock beaches and larger studio pieces accompany the sandbar paintings.
“Painting plein air provides a tangible link with the landscape. The changing light or turning tide compels the need to be economic with detail. The handling of the paint is dynamic and arbitrary, conveying the freshness of a sketch. I often sketch and paint on site which helps with my studio paintings.”
The recent phenomena of the Aurora Borealis seen from the North Coast has also inspired Andrew to paint in broad, dynamic brush marks adding an ethereal quality to his trademark landscapes.
