Set in a beautiful wooded valley, Lostwithiel is located nearby to Bodmin, within easy reach of the rugged moors.
Founded by the Normans for tin exporting purposes, the approach to Lostwithiel is widely recognised as one of the most spectacular in Cornwall, offering beautiful scenery whether you’re arriving by road, river or rail.
Many tourists head to Lostwithiel for its unrivalled collection of antiques shops and packed calendar of collectors’ fairs. After a rummage among vintage treasures, visitors can head to the eerie ruins of the 13th century Restormel Castle, which boasts some exceedingly well-preserved defensive walls and sits perched on a hill overlooking the town.
Every fourth Saturday of the month, Lostwithiel hosts a bustling local produce market at the local Scout Hut, where visitors can sample and purchase meats, cheeses, fruit and vegetables from the region.
Regular, independent craft fairs are run at Lostwithiel Community Centre, a venue which also hosts a number of beer and cider festivals, quiz nights, and musical and theatrical performances. There is a small cafe inside which serves tea, coffee and homemade cakes.
Housed inside the Georgian Corn Exchange and spreading into the former Town Gaol, the Town Museum is a must-see if you’re interested in finding out more about Lostwithiel’s heritage during your visit.
