About this event
Join internationally renowned automata artist Fi Henshall for a rare two-day intensive workshop in Cornwall. Over the weekend you’ll learn how to design and build a working mechanism for a pecking or flying bird, and create your own characterful sculpture using scrap metal and reclaimed materials.
Fi is known for her imaginative, beautifully engineered automata and for her inspiring, supportive teaching style. She has work in collections all over the world including the Kew Gardens Pagoda and The Exploratorium in San Francisco. This is a unique opportunity to learn directly from her, right here in Cornwall — no previous experience needed, just curiosity and a willingness to play, experiment and make.
By the end of the two days you’ll go home with:
• A working mechanical bird
• Practical skills in automata and movement
• New confidence with tools, materials and creative problem-solving
All basic materials and refreshments included, but we are unable to provide lunch. On the Saturday there will be plenty of cafe options, and on the Sunday the cinema opposite provides food. Alternatively you are very welcome to bring your own lunch and eat it in The Art Room.
