About this event
Looe Marine Conservation Talk on Basking Sharks
The second largest fish in the world, the mighty basking shark has long been part of our native wildlife. Yet within living memory, this harmless leviathan was hunted almost to localised extinction in the northeast Atlantic for its enormous livers which yielded a highly valuable oil.
Come and hear how this story unfolded in the company of field researcher and writer Colin Speedie, who spent many years studying these elusive creatures around the UK, gaining unique insights into the extraordinary men and wild places that formed the backdrop to this unique history, chronicled in his recent book, ‘A Sea Monster’s Tale’.
The talk will be followed by our monthly meeting to which all are welcome. For the Zoom link and any more information, please contact [email protected].
