About this event
Julian Gaskell & his Ragged Trousered Philanthropists present a folk anthology of some of the most melodramatic, gruesome and supernatural broadside ballads from the 17th to 19th centuries. These once-popular ballads cover everything from funeral arrangements to cat food and rural insurrection. Although hugely popular in their time, most have lain unperformed for the last 100 years and are presented with newly composed music on piano, accordions, violin, drums, bouzouki, bass, banjo and guitar. This show promises a wild and yet haunting journey through a murky past to a dark future and is sure to enthral, educate and entertain both the young and the old.
“He really is an original – declamatory, vulpine vocals ranting and roaring his splendidly acrid, protestful lyrics over a glorious, urgent ramshackle garage blend of Balkan-Klezmerisms and French gypsy cafe-billy” – fRoots
“Blending folk, punk, klezmer, cabaret… rooted and anchored by Gaskell’s powerful rasp of a voice” R2 *****
“Such originality, intelligence and appeal that the ability to hear seems like a privilege”-Vive le Rock *****
