About this event
The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book was for many years regarded as collected by musician and composer Francis Tregian of Golden Manor near Tregony. His estates had been confiscated in his father’s lifetime in the reign of Elizabeth I As catholic who sheltered a protestant Cuthbert Mayne the martyr
His music along with Cornish composers Giles Farnaby and music by Thomas Tomkins composed for a family in Cornwall will feature in the programme
Carole Cerasi is one of the leading solo performers on early keyboard instruments. She is a winner of the Gramophone award for her groundbreaking recordings of Elizabeth Jacquet de la Guerre on the harpsichord, and her recent recordings of the complete harpsichord music of Francois Couperin in a 10 volume set have secured her place as one of the foremost interpreters of baroque music in the world. She teaches early keyboard instruments at the Royal Academy of Music
This programme will feature the virginals – the keyboard instrument which preceded the harpsichord and were frequently beautifully constructed and decorated musical instruments.
