About this event
Based in West Cornwall, Catrina Davies is best known as the Baillie-Gifford-nominated author of Homesick: Why I Live in a Shed. In her latest book, ‘Once Upon a Raven’s Nest’, Catrina tells how she met farmer Thomas Hedley in the twilight of his life, after a tragic accident had paralysed him from the neck down. Told in Thomas’ own voice, this is an extraordinary account of a life; at once a compelling piece of social history, a rumination on shifting rural identity and a condemnation of accelerating climate catastrophe. Catrina will discuss with Jane Pugh how she subverted the traditions of oral history to bring Thomas’ story to light.
Catrina Davies was born in Snowdonia and grew up around Land’s End, Cornwall. She has worked as a DJ, gardener, circus cellist, cleaner, TEFL teacher, dog walker, flower-picker, builder and waitress. She has also released two records. Her first book Fearless is a memoir about busking from Norway to Portugal. riverrun published Homesick, her book about Britain’s housing crisis and why she lives in a shed, in 2019, and it went on to be longlisted for the Baillie Gifford Prize. ‘Once Upon a Raven’s Nest’ is her third book.
