Doggerland – Isolation and the Novel
Author’s Talk by Ben Smith
Ben will be reading from and discussing his debut novel Doggerland – a story about two men living in isolation on an offshore windfarm, trying to keep working, eating tinned food and worrying about the next resupply, all told against the backdrop of catastrophic climate change and the severance of Britain from continental Europe. Ben will talk about isolation and the novel, and how original this idea seemed when he started writing it six years ago.
Ben Smith lives in Cornwall and is a lecturer in creative writing at Plymouth University, specializing in environmental literature and focusing particularly on oceans, climate change and the ‘Anthropocene’. His first poetry pamphlet, Sky Burials, was published by Worple Press and his poetry and criticism have appeared in various journals and anthologies. Doggerland is his first novel.
