About this event
The Cornwall Garden Society’s (CGS) 2022/2023 lecture series launches in October with two talks by bulb expert, Johnny Walkers.
The son of a Dutch bulb grower, Johnny gathered much of his knowledge by working with his father in the school holidays and at weekends.
He began his career as Technical and Quality Manager with the fledgling bulb co-operative, Lingarden. With growers spread across seven counties, Johnny advised them on all the latest growing techniques and helped to develop a business that exported daffodils (including many tonnes from Cornwall) to Europe, Scandinavia and North America.
In 1986, Johnny established a mail order company focusing on unusual daffodils and other specialist bulbs. This was the start of his showing journey at RHS Chelsea and the North of England Horticultural Society’s Harrogate Flower Show.
In 2016, Johnny was awarded the Peter Barr Cup by the RHS for services to the daffodil industry.
Every Show has a Story will be his subject on Tuesday 11th October at 7.30pm (after the CGS AGM, which begins at 7pm) at The Alverton in Truro.
This lecture is free for CGS members. Non-members are welcome to attend to find out more about the Society and donations are most welcome.
Johnny Walkers will be offering a selection of bulbs for sale from his mail-order nursery and refreshments will be available to purchase at both events.
The CGS is a charity that exists to encourage and improve the science, art and practice of horticulture in all its branches; share knowledge about gardening and Cornwall’s rich garden heritage, and conserve the county’s natural environment. The Society is affiliated to the RHS and its Patron is HRH The Duke of Cornwall.
