The Old Bakery Studios in Truro will play host to a week-long festival of inspirational screenings, exhibitions and workshops this March, showcasing the work of female artists in Cornwall to coincide with International Women’s Day.
Change + Makers – running from 7-11 March, with International Women’s Day 2022 falling on 8 March – will shine a light on women who are making an impact with their work and will champion inclusion within Cornwall’s creative industry.
The event aims to increase the visibility of women, to encourage organic networks and generate collaboration amongst artists in Cornwall and provide support and information to female practitioners in the county.
The programme of events is organised by Cultivator Cornwall and the University of Plymouth, partnering with SheProducer and TEC Women and supported by Old Bakery Studios.
SheProducer Sound Showcase
Monday 7th March – Friday 11th March | 10:00 – 17:00 | Event Space
This week-long exhibition showcases the work of 10 women based in Cornwall from the SheProducer project and celebrates them as technicians and producers working behind the scenes. 10 original recordings, produced in Cornwall by SheProducer members are accompanied by images of the diverse home studios and locations in which they were recorded. Many of these are their first self-made recordings. No need to book – just head to the Old Bakery Studios between 10am and 5pm and bring your smartphone and some headphones!
Creative Women’s Wellbeing Workshop
Monday 7th March | 10:30 – 12:30 | Event Space
An interactive wellbeing workshop for women working in the creative industries, led by Jayne Howard of ArtsWell. One of the themes for International Women’s Day this year is to elevate the visibility of women creatives, and in this workshop we’ll explore some of the common issues associated with freelance work in the creative and cultural sector, particularly for women, and suggest some practical approaches and tools for self-care that will support you in developing your creative practice and growing your presence. This is a Safe Space event open to all women or any person who identifies as trans or non-binary.
Looser Women – Movement workshop with Off the Wall
Monday 7th March | 14:00 – 15:00 | Event Space
A taste of Off The Wall! An easy to follow, open level session to get you moving, get a smile on your face and endorphins running. The session will be rooted in simple but effective exercise, dance and yoga style routines, with maybe a small taste of aerial conditioning to spice things up. The aim? For you to leave feeling energised, revitalised and empowered! This is a Safe Space event open to all women or any person who identifies as trans or non-binary. No dance experience necessary!
Cultivator Pollinator
Tuesday 8th March | 14:00 – 15:30 | Event Space
Inspirational women from 3 different worlds share their work and approaches, followed by an Advice Clinic with the Cultivator team. Thinking of starting a new creative project but unsure where to start? Find inspiration and support from hearing about how other women have done it. Bring your ideas to share, however fresh and unformed.
Cultivator and TECwomen present a night of Change + Makers
Tuesday 8th March | 17:30 – 20:30 | Event Space
Join Cultivator & TECWomen in celebrating International Women’s Day and all the small and large achievements we accomplish every day. There will be a mix of networking and panel discussion, with inspirational stories and conversations from innovators in the Tech and Creative industries.
Intellectual Property for Creatives
Wednesday 9th March | 10:00 – 11:30 | Event Space
A workshop with leading IP expert Jowanna Conboye, where women can discuss the intellectual property issues that are affecting their business and plan strategies to solve them. The session will be an interactive workshop and attendees will leave with practical tips to put into action straight away to protect the work they create, including how to tackle where your work is used without your consent. This is a Safe Space event open to all women or any person who identifies as trans or non-binary.
SheProducer Listening Party
Wednesday 9th March | 14:00 – 15:30 | River Room
Join women from the SheProducer project to listen collectively to works from the exhibition, and to hear about their experiences of recording in their own homes.
WLTM (Would Like To Mentor)
Wednesday 9th March | 16:00 – 17:30 | Event Space
The right mentor can help you to identify and bridge gaps, tighten up your knowledge, and assure you that you are taking the right path. It can offer a unique in-depth relationship between you and someone else who works in the same field. Attendees will find out more about opportunities for mentoring in Cornwall, as well as hearing from women sharing their experiences of a fruitful mentor-mentee relationship.
Song Makers Circle
Wednesday 9th March | 19:30 – 21:30 | Event Space
A unique and intimate evening, celebrating four of Cornwall’s most original songwriters. Join Kelsey Michael, Angeline Morrison, Kezia and Hannah Bullock as they sing songs old and new, talk about current projects, and share experiences about what it’s like to be a woman in Cornwall making music in 2022.
Confident Marks: Open Doors studio session
Thursday 10th March | 11:00 – 13:00 | Studio 19 (top floor)
Drop in to Sophie Capron‘s Old Bakery studio on Thursday morning to explore ideas around confidence, expression, and mark making. Sophie will be on hand to chat about the realities of the work-life balance for women artists, and you can ‘Stay & Play’ to make your own marks using a variety of art materials.
Film Shorts + Networking
Thursday 10th March | 14:00 – 16:00 | Event Space
Join Screen Cornwall and a range of local female filmmakers for a one-hour shorts screening programme comprising documentary, scripted, and animation followed by a discussion and networking. Tea and cake provided!
‘THE TAPE’ Film Screening
Thursday 10th March | 20:00 – 21:30 | Event Space
A special screening of Martha Tilston’s new film, ‘The Tape’, presented in partnership with C Fylm. “The Tape” is a tale of music and romance, with a soundtrack recorded live on the film’s set. Produced by Laura Giles and Executive Produced by Johnny Fewings, the film’s cast is led by Martha, Lee Hart, and Steve Jacobs.
Foundations of EDI
Friday 11th March | 11:00 – 12:30 | Event Space
What is the diversity landscape for your sector, both in executive and creative roles? What do businesses have to be aware of, with regards their own staff, and also their customers and audiences? Geared towards organisations in the creative industries, this training session gives a basic overview of equality, diversity and inclusion concepts for businesses. The session is led by Vick Bain, the former CEO of the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors, incoming President of the Incorporated Society of Musicians, and founder of the groundbreaking music directory, The F List.
Inclusive Communication: Music Workshop
Friday 11th March | 14:00 – 15:30 | Event Space
Using music as a tool to break down communication barriers in business, this practical workshop gives the confidence to speak up, the space to listen and the power to believe in ourselves. Led by Amped Music Therapy, this workshop aims to demonstrate effective communication through music. It will focus on breaking down barriers to communication and develop awareness of what skills we need to communicate effectively with clients, colleagues, employees, and scary industry people!
The programme is organised by Cultivator Cornwall and the University of Plymouth, partnering with SheProducer & TEC Women, and supported by Old Bakery Studios.
