COMPASS EXHIBITION
Paintings by Stephanie Sandercock
Sculptures by Julie Moselen
KINDRED SPIRITS
I first met Julie when she discovered my artist studio at Whites Old Workshops in St. Ives, 2022. She went on to tell me how her heart ached for her beloved Cornwall. Born and raised in Newlyn, she later fell in love, moved to New Zealand and together with her husband made a home and family.
Having a deep appreciation for each others work we talked about the possibility of a joint exhibition in The Crypt, underneath the St. Ives Society, such a beautiful large space in the heart of St. Ives, close to the harbour.
HOMECOMING.
A year on and the dream is now a reality! Julie packed her bags, flew from New Zealand to Cornwall and secured a site close to her family’s roots in Newlyn. She began cutting and welding, making brand new elegant Corten steel sculptures for September.
“The content of my work is an introspective conversation, it deals with the ethereal and the non material of this world. The contrasting light and dark of our journey through life. It is primarily about the aesthetic form, whilst focusing on the play of light and the presence of shadows.” Julie Moselen.
Much of my own inspiration is from the Cornish coastal rocks. I enjoy creating beautiful textures and use mica crystals that catch the light like quartz in the rock. Driven by my inner compass and with the four directions in mind, each wall of the Compass exhibition will resonate with North, South, West and East.
‘COMPASS’
Work inspired by the passage of time, movement of light, cycles of seasons and with a strong sense of homecoming.
The exhibition will resonate with the colours of metals and coastal rocks. Scratches and sparks. Glistening gold, copper, bronze, rusted steel and verdigris. A melting pot of earth, fire, water, air and metal.
Opening night Saturday 2nd September 5.30 – 7.30pm
