Mozart – Piano concerto in A major K414
Bartok – “Contrasts” for violin, clarinet and piano
Brahms – Clarinet quintet in B minor op.115
Late in life, inspired by great clarinettist Richard Muhlfield, Brahms came out of self-imposed retirement to write his autumnal masterpiece, the clarinet quintet. Almost fifty years later, in a completely different world, jazz clarinettist Benny Goodman commissioned Bartok to write “Contrasts”, and in 1940 premiered the work in New York with Bartok himself at the piano.
