About this event
Cornwall has always been teeming with songs going back through the centuries; songs of the sea, working the land, mining, love, loss, war, songs to make you laugh. Many of these were collected, written down and saved for us all over the British Isles. In Cornwall a gentleman with the time and means, and the passion, to travel and seek out, and record the words and tunes (with help for the latter) was the Rev Savine Baring-Gould, who was parson at Lew Trenchard. Martin Graebe has, from his love of song and of the West, researched and written about, and sings the songs the Rev collected (158 in alL) and presenting some of them at Bodmin Folk Club.
Martin writes: ‘This presentation will examine the excursions that he made, and the singers that he met, as well as the songs he heard. I will look at the way that he shared the songs through his publications and in the series of concerts that he organised in Cornwall. I will also look at his legacy of song and its impact on Cornish culture. The talk will be illustrated with pictures and musical examples.’
