About this event
Published poet and NHS speech therapist, Ella Walsworth-Bell believes that anyone – anyone! – can create poetry for themselves in their own unique voice. In this workshop, you will take the sea as the starting point and draw on joyful memories and experiences in and around the coastline. A series of exercises will strengthen your creative muscles and have you putting pen and paper together. Natural objects and visual prompts will help add sensory elements to your poems. Whether you’ve written poetry before or simply want to try something new, let’s drift away on an ocean of words…
Ella Walsworth-Bell is an NHS speech therapist whose experiences of sea swimming inspired the creation of Morvoren, a hit at the Penzance Litfest last year. She leads a resilient group of women poets and is throwing herself into a new poetry project, Mordardh, exploring how surfing in Cornwall makes us stronger. As a child, Ella crossed the Atlantic by boat with her parents, arriving in the safe port of Falmouth in the late seventies. She’s lived, swam, sailed, kayaked, surfed, dived since then…if anyone’s part mermaid, she is.
Ella’s poems have been published in Public Sector Poetry and one of her short stories came second in the Perito Prize, which celebrates inclusion and diversity. She’s been commissioned to create poems exploring climate change; much of her work shows the joy she finds in nature and in the ocean.
