About this event
Cornish Connections, an exhibition of work inspired by the coast and countryside of West Cornwall, will take place in Gallery Z from 5th to 10th September. Gallery Z is a pop-up gallery in Zennor which concentrates on promoting the work of contemporary artists local to the area.
The artists use a variety of mediums to bring meaning to their vision and ideas: From oil to mixed media, photography to ceramics to metalwork; these predominantly abstract artists have reflected and responded to the landscape – in its widest sense – around them.
The exhibition includes both established and emerging artists. Sarah Mortimer-Durant, one of our established artists, is bold in her use of colour to capture the light and drama of sea and land. Chris Mowe takes a different approach; creating 2D and 3D works inspired by a folk-art tradition while Hani Mroz works in mixed media to portray a world inspired by her daily walks along the tracks and ancient landscapes of West Penwith.
One of our emerging artists is Jen Donkin Gourley. She creates ceramic vessels which she then decorates in vibrant colours; both intuitively and instinctively. Jaki Marshall is also a talent to watch. Having been painting for a number of years Jaki only started exhibiting this year. Her images of women offer a powerful view of what it is to be female.
Work by Robert Culwick will be shown for the first time in decades. Robert was a member of the Penwith Society of Arts from 1980, until his death. He was considered by Marion Whybrow, writer of art history, to be one of the ‘core colony’ of artists in St Ives in the 1980s.
Also included in the exhibition is work by painters Bridget Roseberry, Pam Furby, and Annie Eagle; ceramicists Vladimira King, Deryl Petrucci, Liz Thompson and Alex Thompson; mixed media by Margaret Deans; metalwork by Berenice Edgeley; hooked wall hangings courtesy of Lynda Phillips; the digital art of Ali Mortimer-Durant and silk scarves by Sophie Anderson (silk scarves).
