About this event
Richard Paul shot photographs and 3D video at the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden, Tate St Ives and the University of Oxford Mathematical Institute. The work explores how Hepworth and Gabo both took inspiration from mathematical models developed in the 1930’s and 40’s. The resulting 3D video reflects Paul’s interest in how the artists responded to the form of the models alongside the natural world. Both artists soon became renowned for their pioneering abstract sculpture. The video also touches on Hepworth and Gabo’s involvement in the ideas and artistic developments of the time which connect science, mathematics and the politics of life.
The Circle is a Sphere Seen from Afar 2020 was commissioned by Tate St Ives. With thanks to the Barbara Hepworth © Bowness and the work of Naum Gabo © Nina and Graham Williams.
