About this event
Hand-woven digital tapestry artwork in rural Cornwall: Fiona J Sperryn MA RCA opens her studio to the public for the first time.
Discover colour, creatures and landscapes, all inspired by the natural environment and a love of creative process. Personal experience and skilled craftsmanship meet in each hand-woven artwork Fiona creates in her studio close to Bodmin Moor. You will find representations of local places and more colourful abstract pieces on a variety of scales in her special textile pieces.
Visit a purpose-built studio with countryside views. The cedar cladding blends into the surroundings but inside you will discover a state-of-the-art digital jacquard loom, one of few in the country. This tool allows the artist to hand weave her original drawings into contemporary fine art textiles. In a process underpinned by traditional technique, each unique artwork is skilfully crafted with sustainable yarns. Fiona will share how her drawings are expertly translated into a series of weave structures then carefully transformed into beautiful cloth.
Be inspired by a working space with colourful threads, carefully-selected yarns, beautiful fibres, wooden looms and found objects. There’s nothing like seeing these textiles in real life, enjoying the surfaces in changing light and having the opportunity to study the detail and appreciate their beauty for yourself.
See in person some of the large colourful pieces from the Design Nation showcase for London Craft Week 2021. These handmade digital tapestry hangings will be on the walls for sale alongside framed drawings, smaller framed textile artworks perfect for gifts and a few quirky pieces to inspire wonder. Meet the maker and hear the story each piece has to tell.
Chat about a commission, art, design and sustainable production or share ideas on chard, chickens and diggers.
