Lecture 1. Hardy Exotics : The History and Art of Cornish Gardens and Houses Part 2 Course
St. Michael’s Mount NT(Marazion) , Clowance (Crowan) and Pencarrow (Bodmin).
In this first lecture of six by Catherine Wallace, we look at the history of the internationally renowned St. Michael’s Mount, its buildings and contents as well the terraced and walled gardens that date back to medieval times. We trace the history of the St. Aubyn family from Clowance to St. Michael’s Mount. The second half of the lecture includes Pencarrow, near Bodmin, home to the Molesworth-St. Aubyn family. It features a fine Palladian style Georgian house including paintings by Joshua Reynolds and unusual artefacts. This is surrounded by large gardens featuring an Italianate fountain, grotto, palm house, ice house and a lake, as well as encompassing an Ancient British encampment.
