Gay’s the Word: the power of LGBTQ+ books – free workshop

Book lovers! Kresen Kernow are hosting a free workshop on Saturday 22 March 11am-2pm.

This interactive workshop will use the power of LGBTQ+ books to explore the untold history of the UK government’s censorship raid on the world-famous Gay’s the Word bookshop in 1984.

The workshop will be led by writer @Adam.Zmith (he/him) and @shivscamp (they/them), who are on a team of creative people developing a new stage musical about the 1984 bookshop raid. The team has fallen in love with the story of how a community of queer booksellers and book lovers in London resisted government censorship of essential books. They want to share the story outside London with YOU.

And if the story inspires you too, you can share what queer books mean to you and do something creative. Your feelings about the story and queer books will feed into the writing of the new stage musical.

When books are your only option for understanding yourself, what happens when they are taken away?

Experienced LGBTQ+ facilitators and free refreshments. Also, contributions to some travel costs are available from the workshop team.

Kresen Kernow is fully wheelchair and pushchair accessible, with lifts to all levels and automatic main entrance doors. Accessible toilets are available on both floors, with a fully-equipped Changing Places toilet also available on the ground floor. Separate baby changing facilities are also available on the ground floor. If you are arriving by vehicle, there are six accessible parking spaces at the Tesco side of the building and a level entrance into the building. If you are arriving on foot or wheels, from Redruth town centre, the closest entrance is at the end of the public path which runs through the old brewery site, from Chapel Street to Kresen Kernow.
