About this event
Join us on International Repair Day (Saturday 21 October – 11am–1pm) with the owners of Make A Mends, Redruth, to decorate a hat with your own mission or passion to wear with pride!
Along with local historian, Janet Axten, the team at Make A Mends have been researching repair activities in Redruth’s town centre over the last 200 years. They came across a ledger here at Kresen Kernow, from the Vivian sisters, who were local milliners in the early 1900s, with customers from across Cornwall, England and the world. Much of their work involved renovating hats, as people looked after what they had and repurposed clothing and accessories.
They also heard about Etta Lemon, one of the founders of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, and her mission against ‘murderous millinery’. Many wild birds were endangered as a result of the fashion to wear feathers, wings, plumes and whole birds on hats. Etta was a tireless activist her whole life and her story has only recently been told.
Come along to our free, fun, creative workshop and be inspired by these women who renovated hats, ran successful businesses and were activists.
Hats and materials to decorate your hats will be supplied, or bring your own if you prefer.
This workshop is free, drop-in and for all ages.
