About this event
Hireth.Written by Edward Rowe. Directed by Simon Harvey
“Normally ‘tis pitch black – just a bit o’ light from yer candle, like – but for you today, we’ll make sure you can see more.”
1914. Geevor, West Cornwall. Deep underground, three lads and the man they call ‘Father’ are mining for tin. The women work on the surface of Geevor, breaking and sifting through the hard rock. Across the channel, a war has started without them…
This epic new production tells the untold story of Cornwall’s forgotten war heroes and the unique impact they had on the First World War. Set mostly underground, the play follows the miners from the depths of Cornwall’s network of mines to deep beneath the front line in France where the Great War rages. Miles away from Geevor and their families, the men’s longing for home never leaves them.
The third production from Edward Rowe and Simon Harvey, and with music from Seth Lakeman, featuring professional actors and a community chorus, “Hireth” marks the centenary of the end of World War 1 in St Justs’ Grade 2 listed Miners Chapel. Hireth, which translates as ‘longing for home’ in Cornish, has been created for the centenary of WWI, in honour of Cornwall’s rich mining heritage and in tribute to the influence of Cornish miners in the war effort.
The story is fiction based on fact, and is the result of research at Flanders Fields and the Bodmin Museum.
