About this event
The seminar will be hosted by renowned science journalist Vivienne Parry, who will lead the conversation with Patricia Fara and Graham Fitkin. Patricia, historian of science at Clare College Cambridge, will be talking about the life and work of Humphry Davy, the times he lived in and the scientific context of his work. Graham will be talking about his motivation for writing this new work entitled “Humphry Davy – The Age of Aspiration”, and how he turned the concept into a musical composition. It has been commissioned by Three Spires Singers to mark their 40th anniversary this year, and two performances of the work will be given on Saturday and Sunday 20th and 21st November at 7.30 pm in Truro Cathedral, so this seminar will add to our appreciation of the work when it makes its world premiere next month.
The presentation will be followed by an informal Question and Answer session when we can take the discussion wherever we want whether that’s from a scientific perspective or quizzing Graham about the challenges of his creative process.
There won’t be an interval but the Burrell Theatre’s bar will be open from 6.45 pm till the start at 7.30, and afterwards as well so it will be a great social occasion as well as an opportunity to learn more about this fascinating Cornish scientist and inventor.
