About this event
Spend a relaxed autumn evening discovering the art of hand-built ceramics in this intimate workshop led by ceramicist Caitlin Clarke.
Together, you’ll explore clay as a material shaped by landscape, process and transformation while learning the process of hand-building. During the workshop, you’ll create your own Ikebana vase – a ceramic vessel designed for the Japanese art of flower arranging. Each vase will include a kenzan (also known as a flower frog), perfect for creating your own Ikebana-inspired arrangements at home.
After Caitlin demonstrates the key techniques, you’ll have plenty of time to design and shape your creation. You’ll also have the opportunity to finish your piece using one of Caitlin’s own hand-developed glazes. Created through months of experimenting with natural materials such as wood ash and walnut husks, each glaze is developed in tiny batches through a process of testing, firing and refining. The result is a collection of beautiful, characterful finishes that you simply couldn’t pick from a shelf.
Caitlin will be on hand throughout to offer guidance and encouragement, making the workshop suitable for complete beginners as well as those with more experience.
Please wear clothes suitable for working with clay – we’ll provide an apron. Your finished piece will be professionally fired and ready for collection approximately one month after the workshop. Caitlin is also able to package and post the item to you for an additional £10.
