Liz Hewitt & Gwynne Penny explore nature, memory and materials at Salthouse Gallery, St Ives.

Interwoven Conversations brings together artists Liz Hewitt and Gwynne Penny for the second exhibition in their ongoing Interwoven series, staged in the intimate Salthouse Gallery, St Ives. Through textile, painting, sculpture and printmaking, the show explores a shared devotion to Cornwall’s coastline and the slow natural processes — rust, salt, tide, time — that shape both materials and memory.

Liz Hewitt is a well-known mixed media and fibre artist, working with found objects and natural pigments to colour artisan-made cloth, paper and fibre. Her signature rust printing lets rust react slowly with cloth, creating unrepeatable marks that mimic the earth’s own weathering. She enhances these traces with stitch, turning decay into narrative — pieces that sit between archive and artefact, mapping place, industry and ecological memory, and revealing the delicate relationship between human history and nature’s reclamation of space.

Gwynne Penny is a visual artist, and assemblage sculptor drawn to the rhythms of coastal intertidal zones, moving fluidly between the handmade and digital as she explores both the outer landscape of shoreline and found materials, and the inner landscape of perception, imagination and feeling. A Porthmeor Programme graduate, she engages viewers gently, inviting personal reflection rather than directing it.

Though their mediums differ, both artists share a fascination with found objects, mapping and transformation — creating a genuine dialogue between two practices shaped by the same restless, ever-changing coast.
