About this event
Cornwall-based artist Elizabeth-Jane Grose presents Living Landscapes, a captivating exhibition of ten new works that explore the Cornish Coast Path. These large-scale, layered artworks are crafted from natural materials, many of which Grose grows herself on her North Cornwall smallholding.
Drawing inspiration from over 20 years of walking the rugged and beautiful Cornish Coast Path, Grose’s landscapes evoke a sense of living, breathing environments. With textures and colours that ebb and flow, her pieces create an immersive experience that transports the viewer between moments of serenity and vivid intensity. The works are visually dynamic, incorporating famous landmarks like St Michael’s Mount and more intimate scenes, such as a single rock battered by the sea.
A key element of Grose’s practice is the use of materials from her own farm. The wool for her work is sourced from her flock of native breed sheep, who graze on her land overlooking the River Camel. The artist also grows the plants used to create the natural dyes that form her vibrant palette, reinforcing her deep connection to the land.
Through this exhibition, Grose reflects on the millennia-old relationship between humans, animals, and plants, and the beauty that arises from their coexistence. Alongside her landscape works, Grose also showcases her botanical portraits of the plants used for her dyes and handwoven rugs crafted from her sheep’s wool, offering a complete sensory experience.
Join us at the Rock Institute to meet the artist, view the works, and experience the landscapes that have inspired this extraordinary exhibition.
