With roots tracing all the way back to the 12th century, Redruth lies around nine miles west of Truro and forms part of Cornwall’s largest urban area.
This small commercial town acts as a useful transport hub to the rest of Cornwall and the UK, being linked directly to London Paddington, Helston and the Lizard by rail.
Having played an important role in the world-changing Cornish mining industry, Redruth was also once the home of prolific inventor William Murdoch, who is celebrated during the lively Murdoch Day event that takes place each June.
Redruth also holds its renowned International Mining and Pasty Festival which is a huge draw for locals and visitors alike. Held in September, this much-loved mini festival offers live music, historic mining exhibitions, cookery demonstrations, fairground rides and the creation of the famous gigantic Redruth Pasty.
Along with other areas in the region, Redruth holds St Piran’s Day celebrations in early March. In honour of Cornwall’s esteemed patron saint, the whole town comes alive with a host of live music and street entertainment, as well as offering trips on a mini steam railway and centering around a colourful celebratory procession.
Many visitors to Redruth are keen to pay a visit to the Melting Pot Cafe (set within the Krowji Arts Centre, a large creative hub occupying an old grammar school). Offering delicious food served up in a bohemian atmosphere, this hidden gem is also a popular venue for live music events.
