Situated on the south coast, St Austell is perhaps most well known for its proximity to the world-famous Eden Project, located just a 10-minute drive from the town centre. Renowned for welcoming international artists from around the globe through its Eden Sessions programme of events, the Eden Project also hosts many theatrical performances from some world-class theatre companies, including Cornwall’s very own Kneehigh Theatre and Light Theatre.
Just a few short miles away towards Mevagissey, visitors can take a trip to the Lost Gardens of Heligan and stroll through its spectacular grounds. Regular events take place at this picturesque venue, with performances from local singers, musicians, storytellers and theatre companies, as well as historical garden tours, family-fun trails and wild-food guided walks.
St Austell is also well known for its historical china clay industry, details of which can be uncovered at Wheal Martyn, the UK’s only china clay museum. Set within two former clay works, Wheal Martyn hosts a series of events throughout the year, including guided trails, exhibitions and themed family-fun days, giving visitors a fascinating insight into the area’s industrial heritage.
The historic port of Charlestown, located a few miles from the town centre, hosts its annual Charlestown Regatta Week celebrations. Welcoming visitors from all over Cornwall and beyond, the local community comes together to put on a lively and entertaining event which features a whole host of activities and displays, such as raft races, live music, flora dance processions and pasty demonstrations.
