About this event
Lost Libraries of The Silk Road: A Talk by Abigail Reynolds
In 2016 Reynolds undertook a five-month journey to fifteen sites of former great libraries along the Silk Road. Beginning in China, she travelled through Uzbekistan, Turkey, Egypt, Italy and Iran to places where libraries have been lost to political conflict, natural catastrophe, revolution and war. In this way she encountered losses across the longest global route and over a huge span of time, from 291 BCE to 2011. Along the way, she recorded her impressions as well as the histories of these sites in writing for her book ‘Lost Libraries’. She will discuss the libraries, her book, and show images from her journey.
Abigail Reynolds has a studio at Porthmeor in St Ives. Her art embraces sculpture, collage, print, moving image and performance, and much of her work is inspired by a deep love of books and libraries. She is currently showing at Kestle Barton Gallery on the Lizard Flux, and in British Art Show 9, next touring to Manchester BAS9. Recently she has been commissioned by Cornwall Council to create a permanent work for Kresen Kernow the Cornish archive.
