About this event
Join artist Abigail Reynolds for this free talk discussing the journey she made in 2016 to fifteen sites of former great libraries along the Silk Road.
On St Piran’s Day a new work by artist Abigail Reynolds was unveiled at Kresen Kernow. Her piece ‘Tre’, permanently installed in the library window, is her most recent work, but in this online talk she will discuss her book ‘Lost Libraries’. Published in 2017 by Hatje Cantz, it is a description of her travel to libraries along the Silk Road, a journey made partially by motorbike.
“In 2016 I made a five-month journey to fifteen sites of former great libraries along the Silk Road. My journey was based on extensive research and took me to libraries lost to political conflict, natural catastrophe, revolution, and war dating from 291 BCE to 2011. I journeyed the whole length of the Silk Road to find these sites in China, Uzbekistan, Turkey, Egypt, Italy and Iran. Along the way, I recorded these places on 16mm film, and in writing. My book documents my travels completing a journey that starts and ends with the library.
In this online talk, I will share details about the libraries and the inspiration for my journey. I’ll also show a short clip of the film I made documenting my travels and considering what it means to be lost, and the many ways of looking.”
Abigail Reynolds is an artist living and working in Cornwall. Her art embraces sculpture, collage, print, moving images and performance, and much of her work is inspired by a deep love of books and libraries.
