About this event
Catherine Lucktaylor showcasing handcrafted contemporary Raku fired ceramics. Drawing on her African heritage, she specialises in traditional hand building techniques, such as pinching and coiling with many surfaces burnished to a smooth sheen using her favourite beach pebble. Catherines’ vivid use of colour, including her signature turquoise glaze, reflects the vibrant colour of the sea whilst the smoked crackle pattern is reminiscent of the rugged cliffs.
Catherine has created a stunning studio installation especially for Open Studios. This new work was created as part of The Ancestral Wisdom Project which was funded by Arts Council England with a Develop Your Creative Practice Grant. Catherine is of Ghanaian and British heritage and this new body of work incorporates Adinkra Symbols from Ghana. These ancient symbols were originally used on ceremonial robes and for funerals. There are hundreds of Adinkra symbols and all have different meanings steeped in ancient African wisdom.
Catherine’s large rural studio is in a beautiful location near Porthcurno and The Minack Theatre. There will be a spectacular Raku Kiln Opening at 2pm on both Sundays.
