About this event
Mars: War and Peace by UK artist, Luke Jerram, is something to behold at any time of day, but perhaps at night, the effect of the Red Planet’s illumination is particularly impressive. At an approximate scale of 1:1 million, each centimetre of the internally lit spherical sculpture represents 10 kilometres of the surface of Mars.
October evenings mean the cathedral will be dark, enabling you to experience the full effect and atmosphere of Mars internally lit glow against the beautiful architecture of Truro Cathedral. Measuring seven metres in diameter, the artwork features 120dpi detailed NASA imagery of the Martian surface, made from NASA Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter data, Visible Earth series, NASA. Accompanying the sculpture is a newly created sound composition by BAFTA and Ivor Novello award winning composer Dan Jones.
Tickets are £6.50 per person (free for under 11s), with all funds raised directly supporting the care and upkeep of Truro Cathedral. Each timed Mars by Night ticket slot lasts for 1 hour but you can stay for as long as you would like.
It is anticipated that Mars by Night events will be popular, so please book early to avoid disappointment!
Please note
During Mars by Night events, guided Celestial Heights Tours will be running. These offer the chance for you to ascend to the High-Level Gallery and view Mars from above. Please be advised that a combined ticket including an additional charge for Celestial Heights Tours is required and we strongly recommend you book in advance as spaces are limited.
