About this event
“Cornwall-based composer and pianist Matthew Thomason will be performing his new piano suite ‘Gwlaskor’
‘Gwlaskor’ is inspired by the lives and landscapes of Cornwall and evokes the rich mythical heritage and modern societal challenges of Cornwall today. Matthew describes writing the movements of Gwlaskor (each one referencing a specific location in Cornwall) as music impressionism which is more about capturing an emotional response to place in any given time, rather than an idealistic perception of nature.
Matthew has performed this suite only twice in Cornwall prior to this concert but has showcased it in London, Edinburgh, Helsinki and will be taking it on tour in Europe later this year. Matthew draws inspiration from composers such as Eric Satie, Yann Tiersen, Philip Glass and for the past 3 years he has been an apprentice of internationally renowned ‘Prophet of the Piano’ Lubomyr Melnyk. Matthew most recently scored the music for Cornish feature film ‘Long Way Back’* which screened in cinemas nationwide and his soundtrack was described as being “hauntingly beautiful” by TV film critic Mark Kermode on his Scala Radio film music show. Matthew’s very special guest will be AnnaMarie Murphy who will be performing some works of poetry about Cornwall.
*Long Way Back is at Penlee on SEP 3rd 8.30pm.
