About this event
Join us at Morrab Library for a spoken word performance filled with captivating words, rhythmic beats, and the spirit of the ocean.
This all-women poetry collective created ‘Morvoren: the poetry of sea swimming’ in 2022. They are back with ‘Mordardh’, which is Cornish for breaking wave. Their new project is supported by Arts Council England and involved talking to surfers across Cornwall – why surf? Whether you’re a seasoned surfer, sea swimmer or simply someone who appreciates the power of words, this event is for you. Let the talented poets transport you to the waves, where adrenaline meets tranquillity, and where surf culture intertwines with the beauty of nature.
Led by Ella Walsworth-Bell and a shoal of mer-poets…
Kerry Vincent is a mother of nine from Constantine, a little village between Helston and Falmouth. She has written rhyming, rhythmic verse since childhood, but her real love is performing spoken word.
Abigail Ottley writes poetry and short fiction from her home in Penzance. No surprise then that the ocean and the strand are recurring themes in her work, as is the beach at Kennack Sands which she first knew as a small child.
Ulrike Duran Bravo currently lives and works on Scilly. With an MA in Creative Writing, she writes both poetry and short stories, published in the Cornwall Writers anthologies and The London Reader. If tech plays ball, Ulrike will join us via videocall to share her poetry direct from Scilly.
Kate Barden has lived in West Cornwall all her life, and is embarrassed to confess that she has only tried surfing twice. Her poetry is published online, in a book for The Compassionate Friends, and she has co-written, directed and acted with local companies, taking one piece to the Edinburgh Fringe.
Guest poet Megan Chapman, AKA MCMC Spoken, a lyrical rhyming wizard. Her unique rhythmic style and cutting content offers a mesmerising performance.
