St Ives-based flautist Will Sleath and Chelmsford-based pianist Tim Carey celebrate 30 years of collaboration in a programme focusing on music of the EU.
JS Bach’s magnificent b minor sonata will here be performed on alto flute, in an earlier g minor version of the work, as well as two sonatas by the 20th-century German composers Paul Hindemith and Hans Werner Henze – one pre-WWII, the other post-war.
France is represented by two competition pieces for the Paris Conservatory by Henri Büsser and Georges Hüe – works designed to show off the flute both technically and tonally – plus a more recent composition by Guillaume Connesson, inspired by the description of Sarah’s laughter in Genesis.
Two short (non-EU!) pieces for bass flute complete the programme: by the Uzbek-born Australian Elena Kats-Chernin and the Belize-born British musician Errollyn Wallen, Master of the King’s Music.
Will and Tim have performed together since the 90s.
Will is an experienced soloist, chamber musician, orchestral player and ethnic-flutes specialist, having worked in Germany, Sweden & Britain.
Tim is the doyen of flute accompanists, performing with major flautists worldwide. He additionally works as a duo partner, plays orchestral piano and appears as a soloist.
Outside music, Tim and Will share an obsession for languages and Gewürztraminer wines.
