About this event
The town is reknowned for its golden sandy beaches, world class surfing and its historic harbour. Podcast producer Karen Pirie is working with staff and volunteers at the Newquay Heritage Archive and Museum to unlock stories about Newquay, held in the museum’s intriguing and eclectic collection.
You’ll will hear about the very beginnings of surfing in Newquay making the town the home of British surfing and now a world destination for professionals. We’ll dive into the history of gig rowing, on boats used by smugglers and heroes alike. Today, gig rowing is a thriving and energetic sport enjoyed across Cornwall. And we’ll go deep into the seafaring history of the town which was founded on fishing, and later sent ships loaded with tin, lead and china clay around the world.
