About this event
Predominantly a painter of the coast Nicola is constantly drawn to the sea by the special qualities of light, the atmosphere and elemental weather, particularly of the wild and beautiful Cornish coastline. In her painting she likes the ambiguity of spaces, the way planes appear and disappear, not fully defined but suggested by a subtle detail or a gesture of the paint, this is at the heart of her practice. By reducing the landscape to subtle, minimal forms, she asks the viewer to see an abstracted essence of land and sea. Her process is one of using multiple layers of oil glazes to achieve a depth of light and colour while using the palette knife for added texture and definition. Painting for Nicola is a contemplation of a place, frequently returning to the same location to paint.
Nicola was born in Hong Kong and spent her childhood in the Far East living by the sea which has had a huge influence on her life and work. She moved to Paris in 1990 where she studied at Parsons School of Design. In 1997, she moved to Houston, Texas and studied Fine Art at The Glassell School of Arts, the teaching wing of The Museum of Fine Arts and exhibited extensively in solo and selected group shows.
Nicola moved to Cornwall in 2014 and studied at Falmouth Art school’s Intensives and at The Newlyn School of Art. She made the transition to painting full-time in 2015 and was taken on by The Byre Gallery, Millbrook and Hope Art Gallery in Yorkshire.
She is an Associate Member of Penwith Gallery, St. Ives and has exhibited in their selected groups shows since 2017. Her work is in private collections both nationally and internationally. She lives near Falmouth and has a studio at Krowji Studios in Redruth.
