About this event
Of Land & Sea jewellery is made by Becky Short using traditional silversmithing techniques and recycled materials.
Before jewellery with precious metal was created, people symbolically wore what they found in their environment: flowers, shell and stone, perhaps a string of flowers in their hair, rings made from vines, and necklaces carved from bone.
“Growing up in the Quantock Hills of Somerset deeply rooted my appreciation of British wildlife, nature and tales of folklore. It is important for me to respect the natural world, lessening my impact on the environment wherever possible in the way that I live and work.”
Of Land and Sea jewellery works with eco-friendly metals including recycled sterling silver, up-cycled brass off-cuts and occasionally reclaimed gold. The recycled metals are sourced from old jewellery, medical equipment and computer parts – which have been melted down and refined into precious metals. Becky uses ethically sourced gemstones, locally found quartz crystals and scavenged seaglass from her walks around Cornwall.
“A lot of my designs begin with the curiosities I forage, referencing the textures of tree branches, shells and organic items in molten recycled silver.”
Of Land and Sea’s studio space is nestled within a cosy corner of the Jubilee Wharf Gallery; a carbon-neutral gallery shared with three other talented artists. As a collection of makers, the gallery makes a conscious effort to be environmentally friendly within their practises and day to day life. “Giving back to the environment is what inspires us. Our studio runs off of solar power, a wood pellet boiler and four wind turbines.”
