About this event
Join us in September for a new pop-up exhibition celebrating the life and work of John Passmore Edwards, 1823-2023!
24 March 2023 was the 200th anniversary of the birth of John Passmore Edwards, Cornwall’s most generous philanthropist. Born in Blackwater, and educated at the local Dame School, he said that from an early age he had an ambition to be useful, an ambition that was to remain with him throughout his life. The name Passmore Edwards is engraved upon twenty granite stepping stones stretching across Cornwall, the twenty public buildings funded as a direct result of his bequests. There were a total of seventy one buildings across the south of the country, testament of that ambition, and the life he lived.
He lived, he said, “laborious days”, both to become probably the most successful newspaper owner of his time and in helping those that he said earned him his wealth through printing, distributing and buying his newspapers, the working classes.
The exhibition is on during our usual opening times.
