Identify wildlife in your garden to help Penwith

On Friday 15th May from 12 noon to Saturday 16th May at 12 noon the Penwith Landscape Partnership will be holding its first Annual Bioblitz. A Bioblitz is a 24 hour wildlife survey, normally carried out on a single site, with the aim of identifying and recording as many species as possible. As we are under lockdown conditions we are invoking the ‘Bioblitz Spirit’ and making it a Virtual Garden Bioblitz that everyone in Penwith is invited to take part in!

We encourage everyone to go out into their gardens or land at some point (or at several points) during this time and to make a list of everything they can identify! And our team and local experts will be on hand via our Facebook page event to help identify any species you are finding tricky- it could be flowers, birds, insects, or anything! You can also join in by sharing your list of species seen or images to our social media channels using the hashtag #PenwithBioblitz.

The idea of a Bioblitz is to create as many wildlife records as possible, which can then be used by conservation organisations to help them in their work. We will make sure all the records go to the Environmental Records Centre for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly (ERCCIS). Before we start we will point you towards useful identification sources and explain how wildlife recording works.

So, we’d like as many people as possible to take part! It doesn’t matter if you have the tiniest garden, or even a window box, there’s sure to be something through the day that can be added. And please get your family and friends joining in too!
