About this event
Mark Wallinger’s work poses big questions about identity, and about the social, cultural and political power structures that guide us. His multi-faceted practice encompasses painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, performance and work for the public realm, as well as a varied and intriguing range of artist’s film and video.
Questions of Faith is a programme comprised of four works, each of which deals in some way with the intersection between faith, vision and language. Angel and Hymn, both made in 1997, are part of a trilogy of videos, Speaking in Tongues, in which Wallinger assumes a character role as ‘Blind Faith’ and plays with familiar language, to estrange and transform it. Threshold to the Kingdom (2000) shows arriving passengers entering the arrivals hall of an airport, accompanied by soaring ecclesiastical music, while Testament (2021) follows visitors as they make their pilgrimage up the artificial mound erected at Marble Arch in London during the pandemic, interleaved with sequences of preachers at Speakers Corner.
Mark Wallinger will give an artist’s talk at CAST on Wednesday 3 May, for more details click here.
