About this event
Penny Rumble is a Cornish artist whose latest exhibition of contemporary work, Sea Fever, will be shown at The Old Coastguard in Mousehole, West Penwith between 1 April and 11 June 2023. Inspired by John Masefield’s 1902 poem Sea Fever, and her own love of sea swimming, this latest exhibition will feature an exclusive set of oil on canvas seascapes, all of which are for sale.
Penny paints the sea in all its guises, striving to portray an emotional relationship with her compositions. She uses many layers of oil to create movement and energy drawing the eye right to the heart of the wave. “Sometimes I simply let the paint do the work and wonderful things occur on the canvas. But I often have to work long and hard trying to impress the sound and fury of a wild sea onto canvas. I want the viewer to connect with the ocean: feel the spray on their cheeks and hear the soft splash of a wave on flat sands.”
She studied Zoology at Sheffield University before a career as an art and antiques dealer encouraged her to begin painting and drawing. This background forged her awareness of her surroundings and helps her to analyse every detail of nature. Since moving to Cornwall she has specialised in land and seascape paintings, largely in oils and with a keen interest in tides, currents, wave action and the ever-changing moods of the sea.
The Old Coastguard is part of a small group of three establishments trading under the name EATDRINKSLEEP owned by brothers Charles and Edmund Inkin. It is a 14 bedroom hotel located on the edge of Mousehole. Like its sister inn, The Gurnard’s Head, it lies yards from the South West Coastal Path. The Felin Fach Griffin, the third in the group, is based at the foot of the Brecon Beacons just outside Brecon and Hay on Wye. Recent exhibitions at The Old Coastguard include the work of Henrietta Graham, Naomi Frears, Paul Armitage and Catherine Harvey Jefferson.
