About this event
Stevie’s art, an ancient Japanese Fish Printing technique called Gyotaku, is a process that uses fish, shellfish & seaweed which she’s given a fresh, modern, contemporary Cornish twist to. Her subjects get covered with colourful paints from which she then takes prints, before embellishing with pen & ink with her unique designs inspired from direct observations, an understanding of its form & an appreciation of the habitat from whence it came.
Although the ancient art of Gyotaku is centuries old, Stevie’s contemporary Cornish adaptation to this art is quite unique in its design & circular in its deliverance, as finally she likes to eat all her subjects usually washed down with a glass of something rather lovely!
Original Art & Limited Editions – Keeping nature at its core using the Gyotaku technique, each subject is acquired fresh from the sea off Cornwall & the Isles of Scilly & printed as part of the initial circular process of design. Sold as an original or limited edition 1/25 signed prints, the journey & mortality of each subject is immortalised forever.
Vintage Artefacts – Finding old vintage artefacts, Stevie repairs & restores, endeavouring to retain as much of their character as possible & then carves her elaborate Gyotaku designs into the wood, leather or metal bringing life back to otherwise forgotten pieces with a new lease of life.
‘Sea into the Light’ Lights – Made out of discarded nylon fishing nets & incorporating Stevie’s Gyotaku designs the lights come with a fabulous narrative on sustainability. The nets are recycled from Newlyn, without the use of harmful chemicals, to create 100% recycled filament to 3D print enabling Stevie to design an endless variety of new forms.
With more creations in progress including a new textile range, why not pop in & see what Stevie is up to next!
