Stitched Beginnings: Sewn Bookmarks – family workshop

Join us on Saturday 26 July, 10am-12.30pm, for a hands-on sewing activity inspired by the needlework lessons once taught to young girls in schools across Cornwall.

Participants will have the chance to stitch their initials onto a fabric bookmark – echoing the historic tradition of marking linens and garments, a skill that was part of everyday education and preparation for life and work.

Beginner-friendly materials and plastic needles will be provided for children, while adults can explore examples of traditional sewing tools and notions. Alongside the activity, discover more about the role of stitch in education and how it helped shape the lives of generations of women teachers.

This workshop is part of the ‘The Class of 1884’ residency at Kresen Kernow and the sessions are free and drop-in, no need to book.

All children must be accompanied and supervised by an adult.

This workshop is not suitable for children under 5 years old. Materials provided but limited.

Details

Kresen Kernow is fully wheelchair and pushchair accessible, with lifts to all levels and automatic main entrance doors. Accessible toilets are available on both floors, with a fully-equipped Changing Places toilet also available on the ground floor. Separate baby changing facilities are also available on the ground floor. If you are arriving by vehicle, there are six accessible parking spaces at the Tesco side of the building and a level entrance into the building. If you are arriving on foot or wheels, from Redruth town centre, the closest entrance is at the end of the public path which runs through the old brewery site, from Chapel Street to Kresen Kernow.
