About this event
In this exhibition Cara and Jana explore sites of historic interest (ancient stone sites in Cornwall for Cara, and Stellenbosch, South Africa for Jana) and their significance both in the past and present.
Cara’s pieces are raw and honest, hand built with tactile surfaces meant to be held and experienced. She documented the spirit of the land by respectfully collecting wild earth pigments, stone and dried fauna to use in the making of this collection, on ancient sites such as Men an Tol. The range is free and not rigid. It covers influences of the Neolithic and Bronze Ages, with a local focus on early crafts and ideologies.
Jana draws inspiration from the pots of the Khoekhoe people, pastoralists who lived in Stellenbosch and southern South Africa around 2000 years ago. The wildfires essential to the survival of the indigenous flora in this area, is also reflected in her pots. Her work muses on the evidence of eating, drinking, feasting and sharing food found in shards of pottery.
Cara’s organic hand built forms contrast with Jana’s smoother, wheel thrown pots to create a range of work that complement each other in tone and the stories that they tell.
Cara and Jana will both be present to say hello at the exhibition that runs from 16 -18 May at the beautiful Porthmeor Studios, St. Ives.
