About this event
Simon Turner is an artist who celebrates the idiosyncrasies of his sometimes anonymous, sometimes iconic, sitters. Usually set against flat planes of colour and confined within closely cropped compositions, the people within the work have a surreal, timeless quality.
Simon’s art uses pieces of panel, wood and card to be drawn and painted on, which when assembled form a narrative of his interests and experiences.
This collective process is an integral part of the imagery. Simon works with collage and drawing both as a discipline and as an exploratory process that feeds into his paintings.
In his most recent series of works, Simon uses the idea of a ‘Kiosk’ – the Parisian newspaper vendor, the serving hatch in the wall of the village hall, and the London Underground ticket office – to create an interaction between two people: you, the viewer and the figure portrayed in the work of art. By engaging with the piece, looking at it, the viewer completes it. In creating these works, Simon hopes to explore basic human interactions, social awkwardness and it’s potential reverberations, or, as Albert Camus said, “Nobody realises that some people expend tremendous energy merely to be normal”.
