About this event
St Endellion Summer Festival 2023 welcomes the creative leadership of festival favourites, Roderick Williams and Joely Koos, as they combine their experience and expertise to present a truly unique programme that has something to offer to everyone.
The centrepiece of the festival is Verdi’s tragic but glorious opera, La Traviata. Starring multi award-winning soprano, Marlena Devoe as Violetta, Zwakele Tshabalala, currently a Harewood Young Artist at ENO, vying for her affections as Alfredo, and Roderick Williams as Alfredo’s father, Germont. We are delighted that Adam Hickox will conduct and Victoria Newlyn will direct. Performances will be on Friday 4th, Tuesday 8th and Friday 11th August. Adam is also conducting Rachmaninov’s sumptuous Second Symphony on Thursday 10th August.
The festival opens with Duruflé’s Requiem, conducted by James Burton, and Brahms’ passionate Alto Rhapsody sung by Dame Sarah Connolly. Ben Glassberg makes his festival debut on Monday 7th August, conducting Elgar’s The Kingdom, with an all-star soloist cast of Rachel Nicholls, Susan Bickley, Mark Padmore and Andrew Slater.
As part of our traditionally exciting and varied programme of chamber music performed in the inspiring setting of St Endellion Church, we are thrilled to be performing works by Mahler, Schubert, Schumann and our very own Roderick Williams.
We are also staging ‘Wonderland’, an informal 50-minute concert held in St Endellion Hall, which will bring exceptional music-making to a relaxed, family-centred environment.
Our Summer Festival is complemented by an art exhibition in St Endellion Hall, open before and during concerts. Curated by Lois Oliver, this year’s exhibition features Lucy Davies and Victoria Young Jamieson, two artists whose work captures the immediacy of nature.
We are planning a festival programme that has broad appeal, featuring our world-class artists and magical musical moments aplenty. We hope to see you there.
