About this event
Stolen from God is a unique and moving song cycle unfolding England’s involvement in the Transatlantic slave trade by Reg Meuross with Suntou Susso and narrated by Karen Gledhill.
“Stolen from God is a hugely important song cycle and an evening that everyone should experience. This harrowing history is embedded in our culture and so often glossed over.” Karen Gledhill, Narrator.
Described as “One of the most talented storytellers of our generation” by Pennyblackmusic, Reg Meuross is a renowned singer and songwriter. His work is folk music in the living tradition as his repertoire is about real people and their lives, including historical characters and events, protest songs, political and social commentary. Plus, Reg Meuross has the rare gift of being able to touch people, through his songs and performance, on a really human level. His words and music paint pictures that remain with the listener long after the song has been sung.
Suntou Susso is a multi-instrumentalist – kora player, percussionist, singer and composer – from The Gambia who was born a Griot. His primary instrument, the kora is a harp-lute with 22 strings and is unique to the Griots of the Mandinka people. Coming from a 700-year-old tradition, Griots play an important cultural role as peacekeepers and oral historians, transmitting and preserving a people’s culture through the generations using song, music and poetry.
